CINMGA - Gerber takes his first major
August 22, 2011 - 12:04amTwo huge events took place in Cincinnati this weekend. First of all, the Cincinnati chapter unveiled it's new logo The new logo holds deep symbolism in that it represents well the city once know as 'porkopolis' and the fact that these guys will learn to play golf 'when pigs fly!'
CINMGA Bratish
August 7, 2011 - 1:03amThe Cincinnati MGA headed to the link lands between the Ohio river and the seven hills of Cincinnati for our inaugural Bratish open. After being assured by an unnamed member, who won this tournament, that this was a wide open course we spent most of the first 9holes/3 hours in stuff that looked like this!! Dennis Hirotsu walked away with his second major of the season and is already trash talking about his potential ‘Tiger Slam’. While he talks tough we did note that he was not brave enough to take home the ‘claret jugs’ to show his wife! The rest of us are all talking about getting his handicap adjusted to reflect his glide path of 96, 88 and now an 81 in the first three tournaments. We did have to admit that he was pretty impressive today, walking away with the longest drive, closest to the pin, gross award and the championship. Bill Morley once again staggered home into second place, shooting 41 then backing it up with a 49 to also take the Meltdown award. Ken Edelman is clearly a man inspired by the play on the MGA tour and is headed to the front of the class. He jumped from a 102 in his first tournament to a 93 today with a solid 45 on the back nine. This earned not only third place but also a Most Mediocre award which he seems to think stands for something other than mediocre. New comer Jeff Gerber came in 4th place but is clearly lulling the other players on tour into a false sense of security. He shot a very respectable 94 that included an 8 and an 11. He was nominated for the “Marlin Perkins” award during these two holes based on the amount of time he spent in the ‘wild kingdom’ However, the ‘Marlin Perkins’ award ultimately went to another new comer Steve Komrska who carded a 99 which included 8 penalty strokes for his visits to the tall grasses and wetlands. Steve is another player to be watched as he dropped in the only Meagle of the day which was only 9 inches from being a Malbatross!! A great time was had by all as we recalled our great shots to the sweet strains of ‘Titties and Beer’ playing in the back ground. In two weeks we play the final major of the year with all eyes on Dennis to see how his game holds up under serious pressure. ALL PICS
CINMGA Some F.U. golf in Cincinnati
July 16, 2011 - 6:05pmFour strong souls sought a little FREEDOM from the wives and UNITY on the golf course to battle for the CINMGA F.U. Open title this past Saturday. ?????? Dennis Hirotsu became the first Major winner in the Chapter’s history and moved into 2nd place on the chapter money with a meven round of 88. He also took home the meltdown award with no difference between the front and the back as everyone else improved! He did screw up a very impressive round by taking an 8 on the last hole so he is deserving of the award. New comer Rob Chuey took home second place with a 91. He came storming in with 3 mirdies in the first four holes but quickly felt the kind of major tournament pressure that only other mediocre golfers can apply. Luckily his frustration paid big dividends as he blasted a 280 yard beauty for the Long Drive win The ‘Billdozer’ Morley showed what a great host and bad golfer his is by melting down on the first four holes with lost balls and four putts to take himself out of contention early. At least all this mediocrity did net him a most mediocre award. Another new comer Ken Edelman showed that he is a player on the move. His 102 placed him fourth in the tournament but the six stroke improvement on the back nine as well as a closest to the pin award (only 18 inches from buying a lot of drinks!) prove that he has some game. Next up, it is off to the flatlands of Lunken Airport course for the Bratish Open on August 6th.
The MGA enters Cin City
May 22, 2011 - 12:19amKnowing that they all want to die on the golf course, the Cincinnati Chapter of the MGA got their season underway today (May 21st) with the end of the world scheduled right in the middle of their tournament. Alas, neither the end of the world nor the good golf they were bragging about at the beginning of the day came to pass. The magnificent seven took the course on the first sunny day in four years in Cincinnati (at least if feels like that) but soon realized that the golf gods were going to rain on their parade. Jeff Van Fossen charged to victory with a penalty adjusted 95 after dazzling his playing partners with shots like clearing the ‘swamp’ on 17 by flying the ball 240 yards (of course he followed this with a chunk to force a scramble for par). He also took home the Gross award for his 92. Perhaps saying he charged to victory is too strong a word as he simply strolled by Bill Morley (penalty adjusted 95) who went triple, double on the last two holes and then chunked one of the worst ever chips in the chip-off for the championship. At least this finish netted him the Meltdown award as well as second place. He also showed his charitable side by carding the only Meagle (for some dude!) on the tournament. Dennis Hirotsu came into the tournament a clear favorite based on home course advantage but managed to sprinkle in three 8 among his 7 mirdies to finish alone in third with a 96. Ryan Bonaventura wrapped up two awards with a 97 to secure fourth place and the first Most Mediocre award for the chapter. He also made a strong bid for the tournament to establish a ‘most excuses in 18 holes’ award but perhaps this is because the award would play to one of the strengths of his game. Of course Ryan may have made a serious strategic mistake today by beating his father-in-law, Jack Leverone, who finished in fifth place with a penalty adjusted 98. However, Jack clearly has serious game as he showed when taking the closest to the pin award by being only person to even hit the green on this hole! Kipper ‘you mean we get to go to Vegas!’ Burke shot a solid 108 to finish sixth and immediately rushed home to tell his wife Catherine that the top ten in the chapter are REQUIRED to go the world championships in Vegas. The rules committee is also investigating charges of ‘equipment abuse’ by Kipper as he sent a punishing shot into Jeff’s golf bag which was lying on the ground 100 yards in front of him. David Dillman was the young bull in the tournament and set out to prove that the next generation had arrived. He started with a mirdie and 3 mars which had several players muttering something about ‘sandbagger’ but I am sure they were talking about his relief work for the flooding on the Mississippi. However, the pressure of the leaderboard soon brought him back down to earth. He delivered a 109 to finish in 7th place but not before lots of highlights for the Golf Central segment. These included some towering drives as well as a three wood that went higher (3 feet) than it did forward (2 feet) and hitting his own golf cart. In fairness to David, he is a horticultural student at the University of Cincinnati so we are sure that all that time he spend in the woods had something to do with a class assignment. The day was an excellent start for the chapter with a great group of guys who are eagerly looking forward to the FU Open on June 4 so that they can prove that what they did today had nothing to do with their real game.
