Amezcua Breaks Through & Earns First MGA Title At Knollwood

Former Long Beach Medio, James Amezcua has finally notched his first MGA victory in his 3rd season on tour. James also carded his first ever sub-90 MGA round, leading to an immediate "random" post-round drug & alcohol test administered by a 3rd party official. When it was revealed James was indeed drinking during the round, he was handed the glass trophy, big check, champions medal & the 3rd of 4 $20 Dick's Sporting Goods certificates. Amezcua takes over the chapter money lead with his win at the richest event of the season. However, he will now be subjected to the blue tees at the toughest, but most pristine course on the LA circuit, Industry Hills. Good luck with that one, James!

In a town chock full of cameras & video equipment, the LA chapter is immue to it all & has shied away from photogs in recent tournaments. Ok, we're just lazy (focused on golf, but lazy) & half in the bag during most events. By the end of the day, we just forget. We promise to improve in this endeavor. We Facebook Live'd some shit, but whatever...

Chapter Leader & 2015 FORE! Champ Fred "Freddy Fox" Smilow carded a strong 85 on day where temperatures rose higher than that. This was good enough to win the Gross award, but his penalty strokes left him 2 shots behind the winner, Amezcua. A shot behind that, tied for 3rd place included 2017 rookies Johnny Wadds (making his MGA debut & winner of the 3rd Putting Contest Gold Ball) & Kevin Martin (with a strong rebound from his Bastards finish), along with Sam Barrow who had his 2nd Top 3 finish already in 2017. Writer's prediction, it's only a matter of time before Barrow gains his maiden MGA victory.

2013 FORE! Champion Will Zabala rode a hot back-9 40 to finish solo 6th. Long-Drive winner Kevin Hershey tied with 2nd-year medio Benjamin Shih for 7th. While 2017 newbie Keith Hostert & Most Mediocre winner Pete Wilson rounded out the Top 10, tying for 9th place. Ed Spiegel will have the honor (& good fortune) of having the key to the red tee at Industry Hills. Hector "Boy" Villagran was the John Daly Challenge winner because, well, Hector's the man. He was the recipient of a 12-pack of appopriately-named Rolling Rock.

Previous chapter money leader & defending champion Andy Atherton had a rollercoaster afternoon. Although he finished a career-worst tie for 12th place, Atherton nearly holed out on the 293-yard Par 4 14th hole with the ball rolling inches from the cup stopping 5 feet away while the group ahead was putting out. Amazingly, no one was hit or injured and lawsuits were avoided. After Atherton buried the rarely seen Malbatross, he promptly blasted a ball into the woods on the next hole. Then, with Benjamin Shih's mark at mere 6 feet 3 inches on the Closest-To-The-Pin 17th hole, Atherton nearly holed out again, 2-hopping his ball to within 3 feet...& then promptly missed the Meagle putt.

Atherton dropped to 2nd on the money list behind Amezcua. Freddy Fox's solid day moved him into 3rd place, while Dan Wolf drops 2 spots to 4th. Sam Barrow rounds out the top 5. Up next is the marquee event of the LAMGA Season, the FU Open at Industry Hills. Industry Hills has been home to numerous professional & celebrity events & qualifiers, including the 2011 LPGA Kia Classic, Monday Qualifier for Northern Trust PGA Event, Men’s and Women’s US Open Qualifiers, LPGA Olympia Gold Classic, Korea-Am LPGA Pro-Am, SCGA/SCPGA Championship Tournaments, California State Women’s Championship,The ESPY Celebrity Golf Tournament, The ESPN/Lexus Celebrity Golf Tournament, AT&T Jim Hill & Tim Brown Celebrity Golf Tournament, and the Playboy Golf National Finals. Again, good luck from the Blue Tees there, James!
