Caddyshack Open Starts Off 2019 With a Cinderella Story

What a difference a year makes.  We had 8 players in last year's inaugural Caddyshack Open and we more than tripled that in 2019.  A partly cloudy but gorgeous Groundhog Day didn't hurt but I think more importantly that word of the Spring Hill MGA is just starting to get out in the last 12 months.  Most of the Spring Hill medios from 2018 renewed in 2019 already and we should get one or two more still to come.  In addition, we had four new members join so far this year.  I can't wait to see what the rest of this year will bring!

Welcome to new members Greg Brown, Charly Osz, Roy Huden and Larry Waterman.  And thanks to the visiting medios from the Tampa and Pinellas County chapters who joined in the fun.  Thanks also to Dawn Miller who was tremendous help both before and after the the tournament!!

Oh yeah.  Back to the Caddyshack Open.

First I want to apologize.  Due to circumstances within my control, I only have one picture (above) from the tournament.  I forgot to ask people to take photos and videos during the day and at the awards banquet except at the end.  So you'll just have to use your photographic memory for replays.

The picture above is Randy Dunaway showing off his Carl Spackler winnings for being the Most Mediocre on that day.  He shot a solid 107 for 13th place.

The other big winner of the day was our Cinderella Story.  For his first tournament win, OG Lee Hamilton took home the Golden Gopher trophy and the Gross Award plus one of our new Net awards and some money (later on those).  Congratulations Lee!  It's about time.

Other 2018 leftover trophies we gave away were gobled up by oft-repeating winners.  Greg Bobrowski earned his 6th Meltdown award in just 14 attempts (even including the 2018 MGA tournament which he won), with a drop of 15 strokes from front to back.  And Vinny is now 4-for-4 in Red Key awards for finishing last again.

Two new awards have been added this year starting with this tournament:

  • The Stepped in Shit award is given to the competing player in each tournament with the low net score using regular USGA handicaps.  Of course, Lee won this time with his over-the-top Net 57 proving that his sandbagging for the prior two years finally paid off.
  • The Played Like Shit award goes to the competing player in each tourney with the high net score using regular USGA handicapping. Newcomer Greg Brown won this one with a Net 95 in his first event.  I'd say that there's no where to go but up, except that I'm still waiting for Vinny to prove that point.

We also started some optional money pots this tournament:

  • Closest to the Pin was won by Randy Dunaway (#3), Tom Wilkes (#7), Janis Dunaway (#11) and Kal Kalamas (#16).
  • The two drawings for the best poker hand on 5 random holes were won by Lee (four 5s) and David Sulik (four 6s).
  • The low net score was of course won by Lee with his Net 57.
  • We had four winning holes for skins.  Chris Adams won twice with meagles on holes 4 and 12.  Greg Bobrowski won one with meagle on #8.  And Larry Waterman won one with mirdie on #9.
