BERLIN, MD---Scott Deosaran picked up his first major victory of his Mediocre Golf Association career, grabbing hold of the Claret Juggs and refusing to let go on the Man O’War course at Glen Riddle.
Deosaran, who is one of two players to win an event in each of the Lower Shore Chapter’s three seasons, posted the second-lowest winning score in chapter history, firing a net 84, which included his one penalty stroke.
He parred the first three holes of play, as the entire field eased into their round. The opening three holes of the Man O’War course played to an average of 3.30 shots over par, the easiest opening stretch of the season for the Lower Shore MGA players.
After shooting the lowest nine holes of his MGA career, going out in 40 strokes, Deosaran came home in 43, securing the victory by a comfortable five strokes over Tim Brennan, who shot a net 89, taking low gross honors, with an 80 on his card. Mike Conklin was one shot back, with a 90, while Frank Clymer took fourth with a net 91.
Brennan capitalized on the second hole of the day, the Money Hole, sponsored by Black Dog Philanthropic, hitting his tee shot to just outside eight feet to claim the prize, but couldn’t convert the birdie putt.
Mike Thomason, coming of his F.U. Open win earned the Forgotten 50 Distilling Closest to the Pin honor, sticking it to 15 feet on the 16th hole.
Newcomer David Hooker saved his best drive of the day for the 18th hole, claiming the Long Drive Award, while Kelly Shannahan took both the Meltdown Award and the Key to the Red Tee. But with strong competition, his 106 was the third-lowest Key to the Red Tee winner in the Lower Shore MGA.
Deosaran’s win and $0.79 check moved him up to fourth in the Old Bay Cup standings for the chapter with just two events left in qualifying. The top eight on the qualifying list automatically will be part of the team that takes on the Kent Island Chapter on Saturday, October 17 at Nutters Crossing Golf Club.
Those hoping to make the team will be able to improve their standing at the highest-paying MGA event on August 15, when the Lower Shore Chapter contests the FORE! Championship at Eagle’s Landing Golf Course.
