Chapter News

HE CAME. HE SAW. HE OUT-DOUCHED US.

Twenty-six Medios and six guests showed up at Royal Kāʻanapali on September 12 for the Douche Bag Invitational — the one event on the Maui MGA calendar where looking like a douche bag is almost as important as actually playing golf.

And apparently, our members needed a lesson.

Enter Jim Freeborne.

Jim was a guest. Not a Medio. Not a longtime MGA veteran. Not someone who had spent years studying the fine art of being mediocre.

He hadn’t even played a round of golf in 25 years.

Twenty-five years.

The last time Jim played golf, people were still buying CDs.

And yet, he showed up to the Douche Bag Invitational and immediately put the entire field to shame.

The outfit. The accessories. The confidence. The commitment to the assignment.

Jim didn’t just understand the theme.

Jim WAS the theme.

While the rest of us apparently spent too much time worrying about our golf games, Jim understood that this tournament was really about priorities. He showed up as a guest and proceeded to show a field full of seasoned Medios what a real douche bag looks like.

For that, the Maui MGA salutes you.

Jim Freeborne — Most Douche of Them All.

First MGA appearance. Twenty-five years away from golf. Guest status.

And he walked in and taught the members how it’s done.

That’s not a fluke.

That’s a calling.

THEN THERE WAS THE ACTUAL GOLF

Roland P. apparently decided that if he wasn’t going to win the Douche Bag portion of the afternoon, he might as well win the golf tournament.

He shot an 87 to win, with nobody getting particularly close. He also picked up Kinda Close and the low gross of the day with an 86.

Champion. Kinda Close. Low gross.

Three awards in one afternoon, all while apparently deciding that a normal golf shirt was perfectly acceptable attire for the Douche Bag Invitational.

Three wins on the 2026 season.

At this point, the rest of us are basically just paying for his cart.

Dale T. came in as the defending champion, having won this thing last year on pure swagger, and left with the Golden M for Most Mediocre.

From the visor to the M in twelve months.

The MGA giveth. The MGA taketh away.

Eric P. won Kinda Long, blasting one past a field that was mostly just trying to keep the ball somewhere on the island.

Reina S. took Biggest Meltdown and earned it honestly. Somewhere out there, a hole got away from her and she did not pretend otherwise.

That is the award nobody signs up for and everybody eventually wins.

Welcome to the club.

Swayde C. picked up the Key to the Red Tee, which means he moves up a box for the Last Gasp.

Consider it a head start.

Use it wisely. Or spend the day explaining why you still shot the same score.
