Team Canada cancels MRYDER CUP so Boston passes the time playing with themselves

Perhaps still reeling from the heartbreaking defeat (15.5 to 14.5) in 2018, which gave Team USA the 4-3 all-time series lead, Team Canada was unable to muster the strength to compete in the 8th iteration this year.  With the weekend already scheduled for the off-season event, a number of Boston medios took to Black Swan Country Club for some good old-fashioned match play (and a sneak peek at the Last Gasp venue).  Each format would be contested over the course of 6 holes, including 2-man scramble, alternate shot, and singles matches.

Nominated as captains were the top two Chapter Money List leaders, Michael Halbach and Dan Morse.  Selections were made for the non-handicap adjusted match play format in a snake style draft.  Team Halbach consisted of long-standing Boston MGA vets including Andy Southgate, Terry Boland and Mark Moriarty.  Team Morse was highlighted by MGA all-timers Vin Ferraro and Mike Berk.  The first tee times were held up due to the first frost delay of this fall, but eventually the matches got underway.  Scramble and Alternate shot formats were back and forth, leading to some tense singles matches.

Southgate got an impressive 1/2 point in his match with Berk, after being down Dormie-3.  Moriarty also earned a split.  Boland was never really at the races against Morse; so, Team Morse held a 1 point lead as the final match, pitting Chapter and All-Time Global Money leader Vin Ferraro against current chapter money leader Halbach, approached the 18th tee all square.  Halbach’s tee shot found the trees on the dogleg par 5, while Ferraro cleared the trees to the middle of the fairway.  Halbach knew he needed a miracle and tried to pull off a Bubba Watson at the Master’s type shot; unsurprisingly it didn’t work out… Meanwhile, with Halbach searching for his ball, Ferraro’s approach shot hit the flagstick and settled on the green nearby.  Unable to locate his ball in a timely fashion, Halbach conceded the hole and the match to Ferraro giving Team Morse (fittingly assigned as Team USA prior to the match) the victory with a final score of 5-3.
